Combustion #2 Music Progress 2

With a significant portion of the melodies written for Combustion 2, Jordan and I decided to move to the accompaniment for the time being.

Unfortunately this took longer than expected due to the two of us getting into a creative discussion on how to portray frustration in art. Should you attempt to draw frustration out of the listener with your music, or attempt to portray frustration through musical metaphors? Ultimately we didn't reach a consensus, but the conversation was certainly interesting.

The next challenge for the two of us was accompaniment style. The first idea we went with was a sort of chromatic waltz-like accompaniment. But ultimately, we decided it wasn't fitting. Instead we opted for an accompaniment inspired by minimalist music. In the end we hope for it to be a juxtaposition of strings and piano, with each chord initiated by the strings, and then echoed by the piano. Right now only the piano part is represented in the recording.

We have the first half of the accompaniment down. It gets a bit dark for interest/drama, but it quickly moves back to a lighter sound. The second half of the accompaniment will most likely stay light the whole time.

The larger scale idea is for this accompaniment to have a variation immediately after. But later on, we actually want this melody and accompaniment to develop into a longer part (see the final a sections in the previous post).

Have a listen!

Note: The piano is also representing what will be the vocal melody:
"They talk of space as if it were something to be explored."
