Combustion #2 Music Progress 3

Today Jordan and I came up with the second half of the first verse (the A section of the piece). The whole melody is in place, along with the chord progression, but we haven't properly orchestrated it just yet. As I may or may not have mentioned before (can't remember), the piano progression you hear will actually be divided among the piano and a small string ensemble.

To comment on our most recent progress, the chord choices we made for this whole verse came as a bit of a surprise to us. While our plan was to stick to A Dorian (A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A) through the verse, we actually wound up moving to A Ionian, the standard major scale, at some point in the progression (A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#, A).

I was also surprised by the variance of the chords. I expected the chord progression behind a and a' to vary only slightly. But by the time we were done, we noticed there weren't many similarities between the two progressions. We believe that writing the melody first probably had something to do with this. The a' phrase didn't work with the old progression and things had to be changed around.

When you hear the chords get less dense toward the end, and hear the melody die out... Well... That part isn't quite finished. But that incomplete melody at the end marks the transition into the B section. Be prepared for a surprise when we get there!
