With the lyrics to Combustion #2 completed, the next step is to begin working on the music.

The plan right now is to compose a fairly sparse song that continually hints at new parts, but refuses to give way to them. The goal behind this is to mirror the noncommittal nature the lyrics are hinting at.

Right now we have two melodies in the works, each set in a different musical mode (Lydian and Mixolydian). Originally we wanted the entire song to have the same root note, but we decided that it would be more musically interesting to move between closely related keys/modes. We're also paying a great deal of attention to where the apexes are in our melodies.. Something we have never before done. It is proving difficult, but we hope it will be rewarding in the long run!

Structurally, here is our idea so far (note that an apostrophe after a letter indicates an elaboration or alteration of the previous part):

1st phrase: a section (1st melody)
2nd phrase: a' section (continuation of 1st melody)
3rd phrase: b section (2nd melody)
4th phrase: a section (return of 1st melody)
5th phrase: c section (3rd melody, possibly related to the melody in b)
6th phrase: c' section (continuation of 3rd melody)
7th phrase: a section (1st melody)
8th phrase: a' section (continuation of 1st melody)
9th phrase: a section (1st melody)
10th phrase: a' section (continuation of 1st melody)

There might be an unlisted instrumental break, but so far this structure seems to be working. We have set up the 2nd and 3rd phrases overlap in a way where they seamlessly overlap making it difficult to tell where one section ends and another begins. In other words, the 3rd phrase begins in one mode, and ends up in another before finishing.

Instrumentation wise, we aren't exactly sure what we are going to do yet. There was talk of strings and a trumpet, but we always use a piano to write our melodies. And we also wanted a background rumble. But once again, we are going for something sparse.

We'll see what happens soon!
